There is a zip the entire length of the bag, but the clever bit comes from shockcord criss-crossed along the back of the bag to hold it secure and stop flapping in the wind.
Weathermax is the standard material of choice for the bag, as it slides nicely up the mast with little friction. Breathability is also a benefit of the material.
