Creation Covers has started manufacturing padded bags for carrying around your model yacht rig. The design is standardised for the DF65 and the DF 95 now that the 65 has the new A+ rig.

I have a local sailor called Alan, who has been assisting me in developing the design of the rig bags and materials used. The bags are padded with 6mm foam and have a waterproof outer in PU polyester. The edge is bound in webbing and the bag opens out flat for easy access to the 4 pouches for the different rig sizes. The opening is a 10mm wide plastic moulded zip so that it won’t corrode and there is a handle on top to carry the bag.

The features of the design which work well are the clear pockets, as these allow you to see what rig is inside. Also the handles are positioned to keep the bag fairly balanced while you carry it around. Also, the decision to include padding was to protect the rigs and sails as well as possible.

There is also an upgraded bag in breathable Weathermax outer if required.

Creation Covers specialises in dinghy and yacht covers as well as bespoke sewn items such as bags and canopies. In 2017, Chris Gould decided to expend to make shade sails using techniques learnt from making dinghy covers.

The idea behind a shade sail is to create shelter, UV protection or shadows in order for an area to be used for more of the year and be more comfortable to use. This means that every requirement for a shade Is going to be different and so each one can be made to suit the customers individual needs.

The design can include triangular, rectangular or much more complicated shapes in 2 or 3 dimensions. There are a range of materials available to suit the application and these come in a wide range of colours to fit in with the surroundings.

There is a measurement form available as well as advice on fitting, information on fabrics and fabric colours.

Chris Gould of Creation Covers sails a Supernova and in 2017 plans to come and do some of the series as well as the Nationals and Inlands. He has developed a number of smart features for the boat to make trailing easier and the boat better protected.

The toestrap comes as a plain strap made in double layers of webbing with dacron sewn into the middle to keep them stiff. There are also padded toestraps available. Other neat features can include a tube lifter to help with holding the strap up.

Chris has also developed  small pouch bag that you can use to store food and drink. Other design ideas include a padded boom bag for use while trailing to stop the boom scratching the inside of the cockpit.

This is also large enough to store a tiller extension and a burgee if required.

The design of the cover includes a full transom cover to protect the underside of the boat when you are taking the boat off the trolley, also there are darts sewn into the top of the transom to remove the excess material. This has the effect of supporting the cover better while towing and reduces the need for a halyard lifter. (Especially if the bow is raised a little) There are a choice of colours available.

There is also a combi foil bag available as well as undercovers in Polyester or Weathermax.
